Latin America steel use up by 5% in November

Apparent steel use in Latin America and the Caribbean reached a volume of 60.5 million tonen during January to November 2012, 5% more than in the same period of 2011.

Growth of regional consumption was mainly driven by Chile +23%, Peru +16% and Mexico +15%. Production of finished steel increased 3% compared to same period of 2011 and extended to 52.4 million tonne.

In November 2012 region´s finished steel use was 5.5 million ton 8% more than in same period of 2011.

Production of finished steel reached a volume of 57.6 million ton during January to December 2012. Brazil repre sented 46%. Mexico was the second largest producer with 16.5 million tonne.

In December 2012 finished steel production reached 5.2 million tonne in Latin America. With 2.3 million tonne and 1.6 million tonne respectively, Brazil and Mexico stimulated this growth. Finished steel production in December increased 5% compared to November 2012.

Latin American crude steel production reached a volume of 67.3 million tonne during January to December 2012, 1% less than the cumulated volume in the same period of 2011. Nevertheless in December 2012 the crude steel production was 14% higher than in the same month of 2011.

Trade deficit of finished steel products rose to 11 million ton during January to November 2012, while the imbalance in the same period of 2011 had been 7.8 million tonne.

Between January and November 2012 all Latin American and Caribbean countries except Argentina and Dominican Republic showed finished steel trade deficit. Mexico presented the most significant deficit of 4 million ton as well as other countries like Colombia, Chile and Peru.
